Can corn syrup (regular or light, but not high fructose) be used to replace agave nectar in recipes?

Or are their consistencies different? I've never used agave before, so I don't know much about it, except that it's expensive, too expensive, so I'm trying to find alternatives. Thank you for any and all help.
